Higher Education, Elevating Ladies (HEEL)
The HEEL scholarship is intended to empower women to pursue graduate studies by removing barriers, such as financial constraints and offering mentorship to support their success. By removing the financial barrier, recipients gain a confident “kick-start” to their journey.
Each award recipient will have access to a vast and diverse network of “thinking partners.” Thinking partners go beyond the traditional boundaries of mentorship. They will sponsor award recipients in all facets of their career and leadership development, for life.
This graduate level award will support women pursuing graduate programs at the Haskayne School of Business.
Programs
Endowment Fund
Our endowment fund is designed to sustain an annual award, providing financial support to graduate students who might otherwise be unable to afford higher education. By alleviating the economic burden of tuition and other academic costs, we enable women to focus on their studies and leadership development.
Annual Student Award
Each year, HEEL provides scholarships ranging from $15K to $40K, helping to cover tuition fees for graduate students in various fields. These awards are designed to reduce the financial strain on students and help them focus on achieving academic and professional success.
Thinking Partner Program
Through our Thinking Partner Program, we pair students with experienced sponsors who offer guidance, support, and insights that help them develop leadership skills, expand their professional networks, and achieve their career goals. These sponsorship relationships are designed to provide invaluable advice on both academic and professional challenges, helping women navigate their paths to success.
Fundraising Goals
Annual Student Award Goal:
To fund scholarships for graduate students each year.
Endowment Fund Goal:
To sustain HEEL’s mission and grow the student award program.
Our Vision
At HEEL, our vision is to make higher education financially accessible, elevating ladies to rise as visionary business leaders. Through our endowment fund and Thinking Partner Program, we are committed to creating a ripple effect that will spark lasting positive change within the business community. By elevating women into positions of influence, we aim to foster a generation of leaders who will drive innovation, inclusivity, and transformative progress in the world of business.
Our History
Terri-Lynn’s Journey
In 2000, Terri-Lynn Melnyk faced a difficult financial decision—she could not afford university. The same day she made this heart-wrenching choice, she was notified that she had been awarded the Lee Haskayne Bursary, an award that would change her life. This opportunity altered her academic path and ignited an enduring desire to give back.
The Haskaynes’ Influence
Terri-Lynn met Richard and Lois Haskayne in 2001, and their influence had a profound impact. The Haskaynes exemplified what it means to sponsor and uplift others. Their support went far beyond finances—they gave guidance, encouragement, and a sense of purpose. Inspired by their legacy, Terri-Lynn created HEEL to provide similar opportunities to women in higher education, fostering leadership and change.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I apply for a student award?
Currently, applications are through the Haskayne School of Business. You can apply by following this link:
What is the Thinking Partner Program, and how can I get involved?
Thinking Partners contribute both time and money towards the annual student award. If selected by an award recipient, they will sponsor that individual in all elements of their professional development. Talent contributions (think sweat equity) can be made towards the society in lieu of award donations in special circumstances.
